sketching and exploring

I got to work by drawing and exploring ideas. I delved into various shapes, sizes and formations. But, I kept coming back to the basic cuboid shape because the idea was to keep it simple, easy and cost-efficient. I liked the idea of playing with different openings and closings for the product. And after careful consideration of function, usage, material, cost, capacity, human interaction and mass manufacturing, I finalized one form.

define and refine the graphics

By studying the current designs in the market, I understood the value of how dynamic the graphics of a packaging should be. In this particular design, an important factor was to use pictorial elements or symbols to reduce the quantity of text. By doing so, the idea was to make it visually appealing and interactive. Since the revamping of the product design was supposed to be cost-efficient, the aim was to design by making minimum changes possible.

learnings

the takeaway

In today’s world, the primary focus of designers is inventing complete new designs, concepts and products. What is beyond one’s understanding is that - even with inventions everyday, the world’s design portfolio could still be considered stagnant. The reason is that not enough attention is paid to the designs that already exist. There is an undeniable potential in existing designs if they are reevaluated and revamped with time. So let’s all take efforts for endless improvements!

OBSERVATION

the problems at hand

Countless research, group discussions, market surveys and interviews were done to get a feedback of the product from the customers. A draft of the analytical problems was made on the basis of the research. And thus, the scope of the project was carefully crafted. It gave a clear understanding on how to go about the project.

the whY and the how

The matchbox is a product that has a very wide

and diverse consumer market. Thus, its constant

need and demand. The invention of a matchbox

dates back to the 1820s and it has been around

since then. However, its design and packaging

has not made any recognizable change with time.

Therefore, I felt the need to revamp the packaging

to keep up with the changing world.

The next phase was to begin bringing this to life. Visualized the pattern-cut of the box and understood the parts. Studied dimensions of the box and that of each individual component with respect to the matchsticks, to avoid any scope for error. Planned arrangement of the components by developing an exploded view of the possible final design. While doing all of this, the goal was to solve as many problems as possible that were drafted.
